Biography

Paintings and drawings by Susie Fitzsimmons

I am especially drawn to the Purepe’cha civilization of Western Central Mexico, whose curious terracotta figurines are so unlike Mayan, Aztec or other better preserved antiquities.

Throughout the turbulent centuries of its own indigenous past, the later tyranny of Spanish dominance…and now an equally menacing global interference, Mexico has stoically adapted.

Mexicans have adapted too, to centuries of living amidst hurricane, mudslide and drought, volcanoes and earthquakes, troll sized rocks and cavernous sink holes. They have survived vast inequalities between rich and poor, still unaddressed by modern governments. The energy, their passion for construction and their delight in communal celebrations is as vibrant as ever.
